Training Recap – Week Five

Whew! What a week it has been. As you’ll soon see below I adjusted my training plan from what I said I was going to do in last weeks post. Only three days did I run what was ‘scheduled’ – Monday, Wednesday & Sunday. Tuesday was ruined by horrible weather and a busy schedule. We had severe thunderstorms on Tuesday which prevented me from getting outside, and my busy schedule prevented me from getting to a treadmill. Thursday I decided to run a local race in the evening (see video below) so I adjusted the schedule from ‘8 miles easy’ to a 5 mile easy run in the morning and the 5k race in the evening. The final day I switched was Saturday. I decided to run next weeks long run of 10 miles and put my 14 mile run next Saturday because I will be on vacation and will be doing a half-marathon next Saturday. Here is the recap of my week:

  • Monday – 8 mi @ 8:10 pace
  • Tuesday – Rest Day (rained out)
  • Wednesday – 6 mi. @ 7:36 pace
  • Thursday – 5.12 mi. @ 9:31 pace (morning)
    5K Race @ 6:10 pace (evening)
  • Friday – Rest Day
  • Saturday – 10 mi. @ 8:06 pace
  • Sunday – 6.47 mi. recovery run @ 8:35 pace

Weekly Total = 38.70 miles

Week six of my training plan is not going to get any easier with our schedule. I finally have a vacation in sight as our anniversary is approaching and we are traveling home to the great State of Michigan after work on Thursday, which means no running Thursday. So to get the most miles in as possible I’ll be swapping Wednesday’s 6 miles with Thursday’s 12. I have two days with two-a-day runs which are hard when you start work at 6 a.m. and have to get out the door by 5 a.m. I’m going to attempt to do the shorter runs in the morning and the longer runs after work. In summation, I don’t know how many miles to expect out of me next week. My guess would be around 52.

What was my biggest challenge this week?

As mentioned above, my schedule. My job barely allows enough time to see my wife and kids; include training for a PR at the 2015 Chicago Marathon and I’m lucky I have time to breathe. I’m doing my best not to alter the schedule and trust the professional that made it. My life just doesn’t always allow me to do that. Making matters worse this week was the fact that my largest fundraiser for Team Up! with Autism Speaks was yesterday and I was running around like a wild animal. I’m actually surprised I remembered to eat this week!

Does anyone else have trouble with 50 hour work weeks wrecking havoc on training?
